Practice Management Development: Foundation Programme

The Practice Management Development: Foundation Programme is designed to prepare individuals for leadership roles within general practice. As the healthcare landscape evolves, the roles involving Practice Management are critical in ensuring smooth operations, compliance, and high-quality patient care. This programme provides structured learning, practical experience, and mentorship to help participants develop the skills and confidence needed to succeed.

What is it and who is it for?

The Practice Management Development: Foundation Programme is a 9-month programme of funded education, in-house development, mentoring and peer support.

There are limited places available on this cohort of the pilot programme, which is open to administrative or management staff working in a Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Practice, who have been in general practice for the last 12 months.

What is provided for the learner?

  • Mandatory ‘Introduction to Practice Management’ education module
  • The choice of a further 3 practice management education modules  for example CQC, QOF, managing practice finances, managing others etc…
  • Development of Professional Development Plan (PDP) and In-house mentoring from practice manager
  • Leading on a Quality Improvement Project (QIP) in agreement with the in-house mentor
  • Access to external coaching and mentoring sessions
  • Supportvia peer sessions, community of practice and in-house mentor
  • Option to continue on part-funded qualification in leadership and management
  • Opportunity to develop Institute for General Practice Management (IGPM) portfolio for accreditation

Delivery:

The programme includes a mixture of;

  • In-house learning
  • Online workshops x4 (on chosen dates usually 2-3 hours)
  • Face to face peer learning sessions x2 half days

What is expected from the learner?

  • 100% attendance on chosen education modules
  • Develop a PDP updated regularly, seeking feedback
  • Carry out a QI Project that supports an improvement in their practice
  • Active contribution to development of PDP, peer support and evaluation

What is expected from the Practice?

  • Provision of an in-house mentor who regularly meets with the learner and offers opportunities, feedback and support
  • Supporting the learner to have protected learning time to attend training and support sessions
  • Active contribution to development of PDP, peer support and evaluation

What is provided for the Practice?

  • Funding grant (£250) to practice to support in-house mentor*
  • Funded education modules in practice management **
  • Completion of a Quality Improvement Project
  • Templates to support the programme structure such as PDP and QI Projects
  • Learner and practice manager programme guides
  • Part-funded next steps qualification after programme if appropriate

Eligibility

To be eligible, participants must:

  • Be employed and have a minimum of 12 months experience in a general practice role within Cambridgeshire and Peterborough
  • Be in a role that has responsibility for leading on projects or managing people
  • Be nominated by their Practice Manager who agrees to provide guidance and feedback and act as an in-house mentor

Funding

We are pleased to confirm that the training hub is funding all elements of the training programme including Practice grant, education modules, external coaching and mentoring. We will also part fund a follow on leadership or management qualification post programme if appropriate.

*Once confirmation of place on programme and programme started, practices can invoice for £250 practice grant.

** Depending on the choices of the training modules, practices can book staff onto modules and invoice, along with evidence of payment, to the training hub once completed for reimbursement.

Please note we will not pay for courses direct to the education provider.
