Advanced Practice in Primary Care

Role

Advanced clinical practice is characterised by a high degree of autonomy and complex decision making. This is underpinned by a master’s level degree, or equivalent, and a verified portfolio of evidence that encompasses the four pillars of practice: clinical, leadership and management, education and research, with demonstration of core capabilities and specific clinical competence. Advanced practice embodies the ability to manage clinical care in partnership with individuals, families and carers. It includes the analysis and synthesis of complex problems across a range of settings, enabling innovative.

Job titles for these posts include: Advanced clinical practitioner (ACP), Advanced practitioner (AP), Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP).

Training Requirements

Trainee ACPs must be registered healthcare professionals with a minimum of 3-years post qualifying consolidation, (paramedics require a period of 5-years). It is expected that all Advanced Practitioners meet NHS England’s minimum standards of practice and hold a digital badge. This can be achieved by completion of:

• an accredited MSc Advanced Practice programme

or

• the Supported Portfolio (this route is only for experienced ACPs who have been in the role some years. This is not an option for new ACPs).

How will I be regulated as an Advanced Practitioner?

Advanced Practitioners will remain regulated by their professional body. The NMC are currently consulting if the Title of Advanced Practitioner will be protected in law. NHS England have published guidance on minimum standards and qualifications (see useful links)

Funding

The training hub supports Primary care employees who meet the entry criteria to undertake the MSc Advanced Practice Apprenticeship. This includes a supervision grant of £3,000 per year paid to the employer. Places are limited and trainees must have full support from their employer.

Supervision Requirements

There are minimum standards for supervision to ensure patient safety, and to support the development of confidence and capability of the trainee. Trainee ACPs need an Educational co-ordinator, with daily support from a qualified clinical supervisors (provided in the workplace by the employer).  Further details can be found in the Useful Links section below.
