My role includes providing training based on practice feedback, supporting practices with integrating digital transformation successfully, and ensuring practices are confident in their digital skills and abilities. I’m aiming to provide guidance and support through webinars, one-to-one sessions, and a variety of training materials on various digital topics.

Please do not hesitate to get in touch with me via candptraininghub@nhs.net if you have any questions.

Digital transformation is a high-profile area within the NHS currently, with more and more practices looking to integrate and utilise digital technologies where possible. Digitalisations allow practices to improve workflow, enables better patient access to care, streamlines processes, and allows targeted intervention to support health inequalities and population health management.

This is an integral part of the NHS Long Term Plan and is becoming more and more relevant with the advent of Integrated Neighbourhoods promoting synergistic working between organisations. C&P Training Hub will provide practices with the means to significantly improve their digital competencies across a wide variety of areas, providing a foundation from which staff can improve and grow their digital abilities in confidence.

What are NHS England saying about digital?

NHS England is driving for general practice and primary care to move from analogue methods to a digital format, as laid out in the NHS Long Term Plan. Pushing digital transformation will allow the NHS to:

  • ensure rapid access for those in generally good health
  • free up physical access for those with the most complex needs
  • help ensure the NHS’s financial sustainability for future generations

Digital transformation also allows patients greater control over their health and wellbeing, including through self-referral pathways, access to their own records, and better access into health pathways through use of the NHS app.

Digital Training

C&P Training Hub is committed to supporting practices with integrating new digital tools and systems where possible.

AI

AI is an increasingly prevalent topic for general practice, with the sector likely to be one of the areas of the NHS affected by the tool. NHS England has a number of helpful resources for helping practices implement AI technologies safely and effectively within their work.

If you’re looking to discuss and link in with others looking to explore AI similarly to you, as well as keep up to date with new developments and breakthroughs in the area, join the Future NHS AI Virtual Hub. The Virtual Hub has regular meetings with guest speakers from the AI ambassador network, as well as a discussion forum available to share your experiences, ideas, and concerns.

Data protection and Information Governance

Information Governance is a hot topic within general practice currently, due to the increasing presence of multi-agency working and the implementation of Integrated Neighbourhoods. As such, practices need to have a clear understanding of how to safely share information and practice good Data Protection whilst maintaining these obligations.

NHS England provides clear guidance on Information Governance and Data protection, along with policies and procedures to help practices adhere to regulations.

Additionally, practices need to be aware of how to complete a DPIA (Data Protection Impact Assessment) when starting any process or integration which may result in a high risk to patients rights and freedoms under GDPR rules. Scenarios for this include:

  • Processing patient data at scale (i.e. Population Health Management Dashboards, PCN-wide reporting).
  • Introducing a new clinical system, tool, or app.
  • Sharing data outside the practice in a new way.

NHS England provide a standardised suite of templates relating to information governance, including a DPIA, here:
https://transform.england.nhs.uk/information-governance/guidance/universal-ig-templates-faqs/

If you have any other particular areas that you’d like us to cover or are looking for training in a specific digital area, please complete the enquiry form below. We are always looking for ways to mould digital training to suit practice needs, and expand our course to incorporate new ideas where we can.

Digital and Technology Toolkit

The training hub has assembled a Digital and Technology Toolkit to support practices and organisations in Primary Care. The toolkit aims to prepare practices in digital spaces by offering advice and useful resources, which can further support their transition into fully embracing digital transformation.

What is the NHS App?

The NHS App is a free, secure opportunity for patients to access a range of NHS services electronically and conveniently without the need to contact their GP practices for routine tasks. These include but are not limited to:

  • Review their records
  • Order Repeat Medications
  • View and manage their appointments
  • Submit requests to their GP practices
  • View test results and documents shared by the practice

Additionally, the app allows patients to access NHS 111 and other NHS services, and signposts for support with potential health issues and wellbeing concerns. Patients cannot directly upload files to their medical record using the NHS App; however other apps that allow patients to link to their General Practice and medical records, such as Airmid, do offer this functionality.

Can Practices control what patients can see in their NHS App?

General practices do have limited capabilities to control what patients can see on the NHS App, through hiding individual records, test results, documents, or other entries from the online record. However, practices should not hide entries from patient records unless there is a valid clinical, legal, safeguarding or third party confidentiality reason or concern to do so.

For further information on information governance, and when and how redaction from online records should be used, please see guidance from NHS England: https://www.england.nhs.uk/long-read/redacting-information-for-online-record-access/

What do patients need to use the NHS App?

To use the app patients must be 13 or older, and currently registered with an NHS GP surgery in England or the Isle of Man. They will require an email address, mobile phone/landline number (for two-step verification), and compatible smartphone/tablet or access to a computer with a web browser. Proof of identity will be required (passport, drivers license etc.) to make usage of all available features. Patients can download the app from the apple store for iPhones/iPads, or the google play store for Android devices.

How can patients set the app up?

The steps for setting up the app are as follows:

  1. Download and open the NHS App
  2. Select ‘Continue’ and enter an email address
  3. Create a password, and verify the email address by entering the 6 digit code emailed to you.
  4. Provide a phone number and verify this using the code sent to you
  5. Enter personal details, including NHS Number if known
  6. Complete identity verification using the instructions in the app

Once verified patients will be able to make full use of the services available on the NHS App. For more information on how to set up the NHS App and Logins, the NHS provide detailed support on their website: https://www.nhs.uk/nhs-app/setting-up/

Manage Patient Registrations is now available FREE for TPP SystmOne practices as part of the NHS England Register with a GP Surgery Service.

To support you getting started with the service, Redmoor Health are offering a full programme of webinars, drop-in sessions, one-to-one support and resources, all available on this MPR webpage.

The new functionality removes the need to manually enter patient details into your clinical system, supporting 50-65% of registrations, saving up to 10 minutes of administration time per registration, and reducing overall manual workload. It provides practices with a managed route to review and process registrations that need additional input, as well as an auto registration route for patients who meet additional criteria.

The webinars will explain what has been released, how the automated and managed registration routes work together, and the steps practices need to take to get started.

These sessions are relevant for SystmOne practices already using Auto Registration, as well as those currently relying on manual registration workflows.
