Seasonal influenza is a recurring pressure that primary care healthcare professionals face every winter. Additional pressure is expected this year, with COVID-19 cases rising, and the co-circulation of influenza, COVID-19 and other respiratory viruses. Cases of flu and other viral infections other than COVID-19 were greatly reduced during the pandemic (likely due to social distancing measures) and so there is concern that this year’s flu season may be particularly severe as there is reduced immunity to flu.

It is imperative that this year’s annual flu vaccination programme is safely and effectively delivered to as many of those eligible as possible to protect those at risk.

Join us for a webinar where clinical experts will discuss various issues around flu vaccination, how to run a successful vaccination campaign and changes to this year’s vaccination programme, as well as talking about flu itself – its epidemiology, surveillance in the UK, how to manage flu in a patient at home or in a care home, and when to consider using antivirals.

Learning objectives:

  1. To review lessons learned from the previous flu season and understand the challenges of this flu season
  2. To provide up-to-date knowledge to confidently promote high uptake of flu vaccination and administer the flu vaccines to those who need them
  3. To understand the epidemiology of flu and how that has been affected by social distancing
  4. To know about flu surveillance in the UK and how to register if your practice would like to be involved
  5. To know how to manage flu, including when to use antivirals
  6. To be aware of the issues regarding influenza like illness in care homes and when public health may need to be involved
