Hair loss is a common presenting problem in primary care. Establishing the cause and treatment of hair loss can sometimes be challenging and it can have a significant impact on patients’ quality of life and psychological well-being.

A consultation for hair loss can take a considerable amount of time as there are several types of alopecia, which can be classified by underlying pathological mechanisms and the possibility of regrowth. Identifying the mechanism can guide possible therapeutic options.

  1. Taking a focused history consisting of the nature of the hair loss, the patient’s medical history including medications and/or supplements, hair styling practices, and family history.
  2. Hair cycle
  3. Examination of the scalp and performing a hair pull test
  4. Scarring v non scarring hair loss
  5. When to treat and when to refer
