Did you know that 83% of disabilities are acquired by people during their years of working age?

This means we need to be aware of how to support colleagues with diverse abilities compassionately and effectively. It can take time for people to understand they have a disability and even more time to feel confident expressing that at work. Disabilities include asthma, cancer treatment and many other seen and hidden aspects of overall health and wellbeing.

Session Aim: To support line managers to hold empowering conversations with staff about disability and understanding the role of a line manager in supporting and showing compassion for all disabled staff or staff who support someone with a disability.

Outcomes:

  • Understand the barriers to declaring a disability, the benefits of sharing information and how to respond compassionately when an individual declares a disability.
  • Recognise what empowering conversations around disability look like and how line managers can support staff through these conversations.
  • Discuss what might enable line managers to support disabled staff and those who care for someone with a disability.
