On 11 May 2021, the College published a policy paper on the future role of remote consultations & patient ‘triage’, looking towards COVID-19 recovery in general practice. This was based on the results of a survey of 622 GPs across the UK, a member workshop held in Autumn last year, and discussions with patient groups.

The key messages in the report are that general practice needs to be effectively supported to deliver both face-to-face and remote consultations; that determining the most appropriate mode of consultation should be a shared decision between clinician and patient; and that ‘total triage’ models and digital triage platforms need further evaluation before any decisions are taken about embedding these for the longer-term through national guidance. It also states that face-to-face care will always remain a major element of general practice care, but that remote consultations will continue to play a useful role due to the benefits that they can offer in some circumstances.
