Red legs – Inflammation vs Infection
Aim of session
To equip clinicians with the clinical knowledge and assessment skills needed to accurately differentiate between infectious and non-infectious causes of red legs, ensuring timely antimicrobial stewardship and safe initiation of compression therapy.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this presentation, you will be able to:
- Differentiate clinical features between infectious cellulitis and inflammatory skin conditions
- Undertake a correct clinical assessment & investigation
- Determine clear criteria for initiating systemic antimicrobial therapy, avoiding unnecessary antibiotic use for inflammatory erythema

Biography
Fay Penart-Buck
Job title: Advanced Clinical Practitioner and Nurse Deputy Nurse Manager
Fay started her career in Dermatology 23 years ago. After working in medical and emergency roles, she was drawn back to Dermatology, working in primary and secondary care covering inpatients, nurse-led clinics for cellulitis, acne, eczema and the lead-nurse for the vulval clinic. A house move forced a speciality change to Rheumatology, then a clinical research post and the opportunity to work in general practice. Eight years on, Fay still enjoys the challenges of primary care and shares her time between clinical practice, advanced practice supervision, clinical education and management. Fay’s passions are red legs, inflammatory disease and vulval disease.
