Event overview

A multicultural workplace is enriching but it can also bring its own communication challenges. This highly practical and thought-provoking workshop provides the opportunity to explore these challenges and to develop strategies that facilitate clearer communication. The workshop is aimed at GPs who work in culturally and linguistically diverse settings and are keen to improve communication with patients and/or colleagues. The workshop will offer support for both GPs who speak English as a first language and GPs who speak English as an additional language. Whether you’re working in multicultural teams or with patients who speak English as an additional language, this workshop is designed with you in mind. You’ll learn practical strategies to help overcome common communication barriers and grow in confidence when interacting with patients and peers.

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • identify language that can be difficult for people who speak English as an additional language
  • demonstrate a more inclusive use of language particularly with regard to speed, politeness etc
  • facilitate clearer online communication/phone calls and written communication
  • access how language affects identity and wellbeing.
