In the NHS Planning Guidance for 2021/22, Priority 1 asked systems to continue to focus on restoring services inclusively. We are aware that nationally, the decline in access amongst some groups during the first wave of the pandemic broadly recovered in later months, however insights work has highlighted that in some cases pre-existing disparities in access, experience and outcomes, have been exacerbated by the pandemic.

The NHS’s response to Priority 1 and restoring services inclusively should be informed by NHS Performance reports that are delineated by ethnicity and deprivation. Evidence suggests these are the areas where health inequalities have widened during the pandemic.

Through this webinar we aim to focus on what systems should be delivering to meet this priority, through the following actions:

  • Waiting Times and NHS performance reports should be broken down by patient ethnicity and Indices of Multiple Deprivation quintile, focusing on:
  • Under-utilisation of services (e.g. proportions of cancelled appointments)
  • Waiting lists (elective recovery and meeting the Health Inequalities criteria of the Elective Care Recovery Fund Gateway process outlined in p.9 of Planning Guidance.
  • Immunisation and screening
  • Late cancer presentations

There will be opportunities to ask questions through a chat box, which will be moderated. Due to time, we may not be able to address all questions; key emerging themes will be covered, and any additional questions will be taken away for future consideration.
