This session is a to educate the primary care workforce on the practical measures that can be taken in consultations if patients are identified as experiencing gambling harms. Patients often present at a late stage in their illness often due to the lack of knowledge of healthcare professionals in identification at an earlier stage.

Once identification has been made it is also essential that the workforce has the knowledge to advise of practical steps that can be taken on the day of presentation in a consultation as well as knowledge of the wider treatment system available.

This will include advice and tools that can be used to help with debt and day to day living in the current cost of living crisis.

Identification, assessment and management will also be demonstrated through a case study.

Gambling has often been referred to as a “social or moral problem”.  As GPs we play a pivotal role in supporting patients overcome the challenges posed by societal misperceptions and stigmatising mindsets by raising awareness and improving access to services.
