Alcohol IBA (Identification and Brief Advice) supports staff to recognise when alcohol may be impacting health and wellbeing and to respond confidently using a simple, evidence-based conversation approach. The session focuses on early identification of increasing or higher-risk drinking and provides practical tools to help staff offer brief advice and signpost to appropriate support.

Alcohol IBA training is suitable for anyone working with adults who may benefit from support around alcohol use, including frontline staff, community workers, housing providers, VCSFE organisations and healthcare professionals.

Participants will learn how to:

  • understand UK low-risk drinking guidelines
  • estimate alcohol units and identify common misunderstandings
  • use the AUDIT-C screening tool to identify increasing or higher-risk drinking
  • deliver structured Identification and Brief Advice (IBA) conversations
  • apply behaviour change communication skills to alcohol discussions
  • recognise when referral to specialist support may be appropriate
  • signpost to local alcohol support services

For organisations, Alcohol IBA helps improve confidence in raising alcohol-related topics in a supportive and non-judgemental way. Early conversations can reduce alcohol-related harm, support healthier lifestyle choices, and strengthen referral pathways into local services, contributing to improved wellbeing and reduced health inequalities.
