Speaker:  Professor Vijay Kunadian – Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Professor Kunadian is a Professor of Interventional Cardiology and Cardiovascular Medicine holding a Personal Chair at Newcastle University and Honorary Academic Consultant Interventional Cardiologist Freeman Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. Professor Kunadian completed all her cardiology and interventional cardiology training in the Northeast of England. She undertook an international academic fellowship in cardiology at the TIMI/PERFUSE Study group, Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School, Boston MA.

Professor Kunadian has an international reputation in interventional cardiology and cardiovascular research, making her a sought-after and respected speaker at prominent national and international meetings. She has championed diversity in her specialty as a role model; only 5% of interventional cardiologist are female in the UK, <1% are clinical academics/researchers.

She is the first female interventional cardiologist to hold a University Personal Chair. She is National Cardiovascular Specialty Group Lead, UK NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research) Research Delivery Network. She is the British Cardiovascular Intervention Society (BCIS) Research and Development National Lead and Council Member (Immediate past). In 2025, she was appointed by NIHR as the National Co-lead for Research and Capacity for the NIHR CVD Inequalities Consortium (£50 Million award) to tackle inequalities in cardiovascular disease in addition to her role as Co-lead for the NIHR CVD Inequalities TransPennine Collaborative. She served as National Theme Lead for Acute Coronary Syndrome Research Working Group of BCIS/British Heart Foundation (BHF) Clinical Research Collaborative and Steering Committee Member of the BHF Clinical Research Collaborative.

She has developed internationally recognised expertise in managing cardiovascular disease among under-served groups (older adults and women with heart disease). Her research interest is primarily focussed on addressing the unmet needs of improving cardiovascular outcomes in this thus far neglected (in clinical trials, research and care) cohort of patients.

DaRe2THINK

This webinar is hosted by DaRe2THINK, a primary care clinical trial sponsored by the NIHR, University of Birmingham and University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.

DaRe2THINK is a transformational project that will test a new way of running clinical trials at General Practices in the NHS. The trial will use health information already collected in the NHS to reduce the time taken for research, both for the patients and NHS staff. This will allow the NHS to reach new and larger groups of patients that could benefit from new treatments opening the possibility of research to populations that would not have previously taken.
