This GP education session is being delivered as part of the CPTH GP Education Programme. It is open to GPs and ACPs working in Primary Care in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.

This month we will be joined by Vickie Healey for a talk on Safeguarding looked after children and working with childrens homes staff.

For the past 22 years, Vickie has worked with vulnerable children and young people, particularly those who are looked after and living with complex needs, 16 years of this in a leadership role. Her experience includes supporting young people affected by trauma, learning difficulties, severe mental health challenges, exploitation, self-harm, and violence. Vickie also spent two years working within a CAMHS inpatient hospital, supporting teams on acute psychiatric and eating disorder wards, which gave her valuable insight into mental health crisis care and trauma-informed practice.

Throughout Vickie’s career, she has seen how looked after young people often face complicated and fragmented systems, while the professionals and carers supporting them work under significant pressure. Behind many high-risk behaviours are experiences of trauma, instability, and unmet need.

This talk aims to increase understanding of the challenges faced by looked after young people and those who care for them, and to explore how professionals can work together more effectively. Healthcare professionals already play a vital role in supporting vulnerable young people, often in highly complex circumstances. The session is designed to offer both practical insight and honest reflection, and to encourage discussion about how we can continue developing responsive and compassionate support for the young people who need it most.
