This GP education session is being delivered as part of the CPTH GP Education Programme. It is open to GPs and ACPs working in Primary Care in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.

For this session on Sleep medicine and Insomnia for GP’s, Dr Clare Bolton , will be joining us to talk about how management of sleep disorders can significantly improve patient’s physical and mental health and wellbeing both in the short and long term making it a rewarding area to work in. The talk will cover the basic sleep physiology, types of sleep disorders and how to manage them. Management of insomnia using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia and strategies on how to deliver this within local services will also be discussed.

Learning objectives:

  • An understanding of the neurobiology of sleep and circadian rhythm
  • How to take a history of sleep problems
  • An understanding of sleep disordered breathing, parasomnias, insomnia, causes of hypersomnolence and circadian rhythm disorders
  • Management of insomnia and restless legs
  • When to refer to the sleep service

Speaker Profile:

Dr Clare Bolton is a neurology consultant based at the Respiratory Support and Sleep Service at the Royal Papworth Hospital, Cambridge. She specialises in Sleep medicine.
