Event overview
Join us for two half-days of practical learning delivered by an experienced panel of speakers specialising in palliative care.
This session will support healthcare professionals in developing confidence in managing common palliative care symptoms and clinical challenges. Delegates will explore practical approaches to pain and symptom management, including nausea, bowel problems, and complex pain. Participants will also gain confidence in anticipatory prescribing, the use of anticipatory medicines, and recognising palliative care emergencies requiring prompt assessment and action. The overall aim is for participants to increase their confidence in managing patients with advanced illness and become more familiar with commonly used approaches in palliative care.
Learning objectives:
- Develop confidence in assessing and managing common symptoms in palliative care, including pain, breathlessness, bowel problems, nausea and vomiting, and neurological symptoms.
- Build a practical range of drug and non-drug approaches that can be adapted to individual patients in any setting.
- Recognise palliative care emergencies that require prompt assessment and action, including spinal cord compression, superior vena cava obstruction, hypercalcaemia, seizures and haemorrhage.
- Consider more complex prescribing decisions, including how to adjust treatment when renal or liver function is impaired.
- Gain confidence in prescribing and reviewing anticipatory medicines, keeping plans proportionate and centred on the needs of the patient.
Topics include:
- Pain and symptom management
- Prescribing in palliative care
- End-of-life and anticipatory planning
- Palliative care emergencies
