Event overview

Join us for two half-days filled with brief lectures and engaging speakers.

This course will equip General Practitioners with the knowledge and confidence to recognise when patients may be approaching the end of life, have honest and compassionate conversations, and develop practical plans that support patients and their families. Delegates will explore the management of breathlessness, respiratory and neurological symptoms, develop a practical approach to supporting people with advanced neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease and motor neurone disease. The programme will also cover the management of diabetes in the last year of life, advanced care planning and complex prescribing decisions in renal and liver impairment.

Learning objectives:

  • Develop a practical approach to supporting people with advanced neurological conditions, such as Parkinson’s disease and motor neurone disease, including symptom management and planning ahead
  • Understand how to approach diabetes care in the last year of life, with a focus on treatment that is helpful, realistic and proportionate
  • Consider more complex prescribing decisions, including how to adjust treatment when renal or liver function is impaired
  • Improve recognition of when a person may be in the last year of life, or actively dying, while acknowledging the uncertainty that is often present
  • Understand the importance of advance care planning and how to broach this, including DNACPR decisions, Preferred Place of Care and Preferred Place of Death
  • Consider practical ways to manage difficult conversations, particularly where there is uncertainty, strong emotion, differing expectations or complex family dynamics

Topics include:

  • Breathlessness and respiratory symptoms
