This 1 hour online training session is to support all healthcare professionals to advise patients on the benefits of physical activity for the prevention and management of long-term conditions.

The session will be delivered by Physical Activity Clinical Champion for East of England and GP, Dr Vasandhara Thoroughgood.

According to the Office for Health Improvement & Disparities, (OHID, formerly Public Health England), 1 in 3 men and 1 in 2 women are not achieving recommended levels of activity for good health, with people with long term conditions twice as likely to be amongst the least active. Evidence suggests 1 in 4 people would be more active if advised by a GP or nurse.

Public Health England & OHID have trained over 25,000 healthcare professionals, with evaluations noting improved knowledge, confidence and frequency of patient physical activity conversations. 40% of healthcare professionals were having more conversations with their patients about physical activity post-training.

Benefits of Training

  • Access evidence-based resources proven to increase knowledge and confidence, and support clinical practice in line with NICE guidance
  • Improve management and care of patients with more than 30 long-term conditions (including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, depression, musculoskeletal issues, some cancers)
  • Help reduce service demand and reduce the £0.9 billion annual cost to NHS associated with insufficient physical activity
