This education session is being delivered by Joao Costa, Clinical Pharmacist, as part of the GP Fellowship Education Programme and is open to Cambridgeshire and Peterborough GPs who are enrolled on the GP Fellowship Scheme or who are within their first 5 years of practice.

The following are some of the questions to be discussed in this session in light of the present state of the art and with the aim to create new ideas and approaches to promote better self-care and, improve their health and wellbeing.

  • Adopting self-care habits can help prevent disease and promote a healthier life. By understanding their own health conditions and how to manage them, patients are able to make informed decisions about their medication, health and lifestyle.
  • Patients who self-care have been shown to have increased quality of life and had better clinical outcomes. This is more effective when encouraged and supported by healthcare services, to actively involve patients in decisions about their own health and care. This new mindset can lead to better medical outcomes and lead to savings to the National Health Service.

  • What is the best approach to promote self-care? How could we counsel patients on their self-care and when should a healthcare professional do so? Which healthcare professionals could be involved in this process and how.
