Aims

Health professionals are under increasing pressures – with higher demands, staff shortages and a greater focus on tasks and timescales – this requires a rethink of what is safe practice. Key to this is the concept of Professional Curiosity.  Professional Curiosity, or a lack of, has been identified in numerous local and national safeguarding reviews as a key learning theme.  Practising in a Professional Curious way enables staff to challenge the information they receive, identify concerns and make connections to create greater understanding.

In this short course we intend to take a psycho-social and psychodynamic approach to developing an understanding of ‘under the surface’ aspects of Professional Curiosity. Allowing space to consider the barriers to helpful communication, what might prevent our natural curious stance, understanding our professional vulnerability and more.

Intended Learning Outcomes

  • Gaining understanding of Professional Curiosity and the barriers to a successful use of this framework.
  • Discuss the principles of developing positive relationships with children, young people and the adults
  • Consider the importance of confidentiality and the setting, including sharing information with, and about, children, young people and adults.
  • Explore ways to develop a rapport and raise sensitive topics with children, young people and adults
  • Explore and reflect on personal responses to a range of challenging scenarios with children, young people and adults in complex cases
  • Demonstrate the use of clear, appropriate and supportive communication that can be used with children, young people and adults to encourage safer practice
  • Consider communication through the lenses of SOCIAL GRACES
  • Further develop confidence in applying Professional Curiosity to practice

Course Delivery

This course will be delivered online, using Zoom, over 2 half-days. It is expected that all participants commit to and attend both sessions of the training programme for their cohort.
