To be of clinical value, diagnostic spirometry has to be performed to a high standard and should only be performed by people who have been appropriately trained and assessed as competent, demonstrating that they have achieved the standards established by the ARTP for performance and interpretation of spirometry measurements.

We are working in partnership with the Respiratory Physiology Services at Cambridge University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (CUH) and North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust (NWAFT) to provide training to two participants from each PCN.  Participants will be expected to complete the training and to undertake the assessment through the Association for Respiratory Technology & Physiology (ARTP) to become a certified as competent.

Day 1 is a virtual workshop.

Day 2 is a half day face to face workshop either 09:00-12:30 (fully booked) or 13:00-16:30 at Hemingford Pavilion, Manor Road, Hemingford Grey, Huntingdon, PE28 9BX

Participants are encouraged to bring their Practice Spirometry equipment (Spirometer and calibration syringe) to the practical workshop on Day 2.

Once complete, participants will be registered with the ARTP for assessment and certification.

Full Certification (Performing & Interpreting) involves collating a Portfolio of Evidence, a Multiple Choice Exam and an OSCE practical Exam

Foundation Certification (Performing Only) involves collating a Portfolio of Evidence and an OSCE practical Exam

Participants will be allocated a mentor to support preparation for their assessments.

Ideally, each PCN will put forward one Registered Nurse who will be trained to perform and interpret Spirometry and one Health Care Assistant who will be trained to perform Spirometry.  Participants will be trained on the understanding on completion of the course, they will utilise their skills to support provision of Spirometry across the PCN.
