NHS College of Leadership and Management

Last updated Friday 31st July 2026

NHS England has launched the new NHS College of Leadership and Management, alongside the NHS Leadership and Management Framework, marking a significant step towards strengthening and professionalising leadership and management across the NHS. The College will serve as the national home for leadership, management and talent excellence, supporting leaders and managers at every stage of their career journey (from aspiring first-time managers through to executive leaders).

The new Framework has been developed in response to national reviews of leadership and aims to provide a consistent approach to leadership and management development across all settings and professions. It establishes:

  • A national Leadership and Management Code outlining the principles and behaviours expected of NHS leaders and managers.
  • A consistent set of leadership and management standards and competencies across all levels.
  • A self-assessment tool to support personal development, appraisal conversations and career progression.
  • Future access to a range of development resources, including online learning, a 360° feedback tool and a national development curriculum.

The Framework also supports the implementation of the new NHS Staff Standards, including the first national NHS staff standard on line management, reinforcing the importance of effective, compassionate and inclusive leadership.

For our workforce working across general practice nursing, primary care and neighbourhood health, this presents an opportunity to reflect on how we develop, support and strengthen nursing leadership at every level of practice, ensuring our profession continues to have a strong voice in shaping and delivering future healthcare services.
