As a newly qualified Advanced Practitioner (AP) Nurse, the General Practice Fellowship (Preceptorship) funded by NHS England is designed to provide you with a 2-year programme of support and education as you get established in your new post. You’ll benefit from a combination of early career learning, preceptorship (mentorship), peer support and coaching, to help you develop your skills and progress your career in General Practice.

Eligibility

The scheme is open to all Advanced Practitioners with NMC registration, who completed their ACP Masters within the last 12 months (rolling) and who is employed in a substantive post in a Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Practice.

Fellowship Highlights

SUPPORTED INDUCTION

A supported induction to help you settle into your new role.

FUNDED DEVELOPMENT TIME 

Practices will receive a financial grant to release Fellows for 4hrs per week to support learning and development. (Funding will be calculated pro-rata for Fellows working less than full time.)

TAILORED EDUCATION

Bespoke training and education opportunities to meet the needs of the newly qualified Advanced Practitioner.

SKILLS DEVELOPMENT

Access to our wider Training Hub learning programme with a wide range of topics.

CLINICAL SUPERVISION

Fellows will participate in bimonthly group AP supervision, creating a safe space to reflect on their experiences and development.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT

Access to recognised development programmes and individual development opportunities.

Advanced Practitioner fellows will complete one of the following in year 2 of the fellowship, supporting continued competence in the four pillars of clinical practice:

  • Quality improvement project at practice or PCN level
  • Tier 3 Educator training
  • Professional Nurse Advocate (preceptor) training

Education

A session per week for the AP to use for protected learning and development time. This should include practice-based opportunities to meet the learning needs of the individual and captured in their personal development plan, including attendance at the following Training Hub events:

  • Monthly ACP Forum
  • Annual NB Medical/ Red Whale update day
  • GP & ACP Education sessions (where relevant)
  • ACP Masterclasses (where relevant)
  • Bi-monthly group ACP supervision

Funding

Funding is via a grant to the employing practice, there is no funding direct to fellows. Practices will receive a financial grant to help support each fellow to engage with education, mentoring and peer networking.

Backfill funding to release fellows for learning time is based on actual salary + 30% uplift for on-costs.

Backfill funding will be calculated pro rata for fellows working less than full time.
(eg. an ACP working 6 sessions will receive 0.66 of the backfill grant.)

Example of funding: ACP
Annual sessional rate:* £5,000
Uplift for on-costs: 30%
Annual Backfill: £6,500
Total 2-year fellowship: £13,000

*Practice will be asked to provide salary details at time of application (hourly rate)
